The energy captured by a wind wheel and solar modules on the roof of the school is to be made visually perceptible. The artist found the equivalent in a metal, fine-structured tower with two cubes sliding up and down creating a moving image in their overlapping. Überschneidung ein bewegliches Bild formen....
The idea for this kinetic sculpture arose from very didactic requirements: The energy captured by a wind turbine and solar panels on the roof of the school was to be transformed into movement and visualised in a work of art. What is special about the "Wind Scale" is that the transformation of the fleeting forces of nature into a mechanical performance is depicted very accurately, but at the same time this physical effect is transcended into a non-mechanical, purely aesthetic phenomenon. The electricity generated by the wind turbine is first channelled into the physics classroom, where it can be checked on a measuring device, and then flowing on to the "Wind Scale", in which a small motor operates the upward and downward movement of the cubes. The tower itself consists of four ultra-slim stainless steel pillars, stiffened crosswise with fine stainless steel rods. wo cubes made of steel mesh, open at the top and bottom, slide up and down on these pillars; they are connected to each other by a closed pull-wire guided by deflection wheels. The wider cube moves along the pillars on the outside, the taller one on the inside. In the up and down movement, they penetrate each other, keep each other in a state of balance and form a moving moiré image due to the movement of the coloured, overlapping mesh elements. This creates a very meditative optical effect, resembling the flickering of a water surface or a television screen. This "film image" can be viewed very well from the large break room on the first floor of the school building. The colours of the cubes are light turquoise and light yellow. In their overlapping, they are blending towards grass green. The "Wind Scale" stands slightly off-centre in front of the main entrance to the school and slightly off the axis of the trees towards the road in order to mark the location for passing traffic. The "Wind Scale" appears graceful and weightless and gives the building and the surrounding space a more generous dimension. Energy-conscious, complex technology is transformed - moved by the air in the air - into subtle, playful aesthetic. |
